Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) is the civic body that governs the city of Mumbai (Bombay). It is India’s richest municipal organization. Its annual budget is even more than that of some of the small states of India. Established under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, it is responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city and some suburbs of Mumbai.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) is the primary agency responsible for urban governance in Greater Mumbai.

The Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) was created in 1865 and Arthur Crawford was its first Municipal Commissioner.

The Act provided for a Municipal Corporation and a Town Council. Half the members of the BMC and three quarters of the members of the Council were to be elected by the people. The rest were to be government appointees.
